When I’m learning a new crochet stitch, I often make a washcloth. That way I feel like I’m at least working toward a finished product, instead of something I’ll frog. For learning tapestry crochet, I made this heart washcloth. I’m adding the pattern info below if you’d like to give it a try too!
Notes about tapestry crochet:
- When working tapestry crochet, the non-working color will be carried as you work. The non-working yarn should be enclosed within your stitches as you go. Meaning, crochet around the non-working yarn as you go.
- When changing colors in tapestry crochet, the color change will occur in the MIDDLE of the last stitch of the current color. To complete the change:
- In the last stitch of the current color, insert hook, yarn over, pull through. With two loops on the hook, pull the current color to the front of your work, over the contrasting color.
- Yarn over with the contrasting color and complete the sc. Continue working with contrasting color (carrying the other color inside of each stitch) until pattern indicates the next color change. Follow the steps above for each indicated color change.
Here is a good resource for beginner tapestry crochet information that I found helpful:

This is another helpful beginner article, and also shows examples of working tapestry crochet in both loops vs. back look only. (Crocheting in the back loop only is the technique I used for the Heart Washcloth).

Abbreviations:
sc = single crochet
blo = back loop only
ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
Notes:
- Chain (ch) 1 turn at end of each row does NOT count as a stitch.
- Throughout the project, single crochet (sc) in the back loop only (blo). [Bonus – sc in blo creates a ribbed fabric that I think is a nice texture for a kitchen washcloth!]
- When reading this pattern start at the bottom right of the pattern. Odd number rows are read right to left and are considered the ‘right side’ (RS). Even number rows are read left to right and are considered the ‘wrong side’ (WS). Although, with this pattern, there really isn’t a right or wrong side.
- When changing colors in tapestry crochet: in the last stitch of the current color, insert hook, yarn over, pull through. With two loops on the hook, pull the current color to the front of your work, over the contrasting color. Yarn over with the contrasting color and complete the sc. Continue working with contrasting color until pattern indicates the next color change. Follow the steps above for each indicated color change.
Chain 34
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, and each ch across (33 sts), ch 1, turn
Row 2: begin carrying the contrasting color at the beginning of the row, sc in blo in each st across (33 sts), ch 1, turn
Row 3 – 5: carrying the contrasting color with your work, sc in blo in each st across (33 sts), ch 1, turn
Row 6 – 28: following the pattern, sc in
Row 29 – 32: continue carrying the contrasting color with your work, sc in blo in each st across (33 sts), ch 1, turn. At end of row 32, drop contrasting color. (Note: don’t cut the yarn, we will pick this up to add a border.)
Row 33: sc in blo in each st across (33 sts). Fasten off.
Border: Rember that contrasting color we dropped at the end of row 32? Starting at that location add a sc border around the entire washcloth. Once you get back to the starting of the border, join with a slip stitch and fasten off. Weave in ends, and enjoy a finished product created while learning!
