Keychain Tassel

For Teacher Appreciation week this school year, we made school-themed keychains for teachers, including a keychain tassel. My kids are in Middle School and High School, so we had quite a few gifts to put together. These keychains were fun to make, and the kids both helped. Colton (my middle-schooler) helped to stamp the metal charms, and Renee (my high-schooler) made the tassels.

Keychains like this don’t have to be just for teacher appreciation.  How about a gift for friends and family? Or a cute gift topper, instead of a bow! Maybe a Realtor would like to give one to a home buyer with their new home keys attached? There are so many ways you could customize!  How would you use them?

Note: My original idea for this post included the tassel, metal charm, and gift tag. However, I decided that would make for a long post and opted to split it up. This post focuses on how to make the tassel.

We kept our tassels on the small side since we paired them with a metal charm. Our finished tassel size (tassel only, not including keychain) are 2-1/2 inches long. If you want larger tassels just adjust your length of thread accordingly when measuring and cutting the embroidery floss.

I’ve included pictures of each step below, for those that are more visual learners.

Steps

  • Measure and cut the embroidery floss.
    • Cut 6″ lengths of embroidery floss
    • 7 strands in each color
    • Total of 21 strands (3×7=21)

  • Bundle the cut embroidery thread and feed through the larger jump ring. Center the jump ring and fold embroidery floss.
Keychain Tassel: Feed embroidery thread onto larger jump ring and center.

  • Cut one 6 inch length of embroidery floss in the desired color to wrap the top of the tassel.

  • Near the jump ring, wrap the tassel with embroidery thread tying knots every 2-3 wraps. Double knot the final knot and use a tapestry needle to thread the tails into the center of the tassel.
  • Trim the tassel to desired length. Ours were about 2.5″ long.
  • Add smaller jump ring, and split key ring.

Enjoy the tassel keychain as-is, or add metal charms or other desired items and enjoy!
