Hand Lettering!
At the beginning of a new year, I know many people make new years resolutions. Instead of a ‘traditional’ resolution like joining a gym, why not pick a skill you’d like to learn or improve? That’s what I’m doing! I’m committing to learning more about Hand Lettering!
I’ve been crafting for as long as I can remember. And like many crafters, I’ve used a variety of mediums and techniques. Over the years I’ve definitely written on various items with different kinds of pens or paint. (In the late 80’s – early 90’s I used my share of paint pens! Rember those popular dot letters?!) But, I’ve never taken the time to focus and learn the various techniques. And there are so many sources of inspiration and learning…just google ‘hand lettering’!
You don’t have to have fancy tools or pens to get started. You may even have some items on hand already if you have kids or craft supplies! Things like:
- Crayola Markers
- Gel Pens
- Pencils
However, if you want a book, kit, or letting pens to get started with, my daughter and I have some tools and books that we are using. Here’s what we are starting with:
- Hand Lettering 101
- Tombow Beginner Lettering Set
- Kelly Creates “Learn Brush Lettering” Book
- Kelly Creates Black Brush Pen Set (this was helpful to try the 3 different brush tip sizes)
- Micron Pen Set (Black) (this was another helpful set to try 3 different tip sizes)
These are some of my current favorite sources of hand lettering inspiration on Instagram:
Here’s to learning something new! What do you want to learn or improve this year?
